Thelonious Monk is an exceptional American jazz musician and composer. He has made numerous contributions to jazz through his improvisational style, becoming the second most recorded jazz musician behind Duke Ellington. Thelonious released Monk in 1954, with Prestige Records; his second album under the Prestige label. The cover art for Monk was created by Andy Warhol. "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" is a magnificent display of Monk's piano skill; giving the piano a whimsical sound. Monk is a piano master, with the ability to both improvise and lead the jazz ensemble. "Let's Call This" is an excellent example of his leadership. While the horn is in the foreground, Monk is leading the ensemble on the piano. Much of today's modern jazz is influenced by the standards set by Thelonious Monk.
