Majical Cloudz is a musical duo unlike any other. I saw Devon Welsh (lead singer) and Matthew Otto (electronic producer) on their first tour in 2012; and I was blown away. That night they opened for Youth Lagoon and by the end of their performance it was clear Majical Cloudz would be a hard act to follow. Devon really gives all he has to offer when he performs. He uses a technique where he will position his body in a way that it seems to create a different, more powerful sound (it could just be how he sings and it have no impact on the sound like Jethro Tull would play on one leg). Devon and Matt are very friendly. After their performance I had the pleasure of speaking with them and they signed my copy of their Turns, Turns, Turns EP. I wish I had the opportunity to see them again.
Their latest album, Are You Alone? was release October of 2015 and was very well received. Unfortunately, they announced that this was to be their last full length album together. Their break up aside, this album is fantastic. The use of the electronic organ is very complimentary to Devon's vocals. Their song 'Downtown' fills the listener with chills. Matt creates the perfect music to accompany Devon as he sings, creating an elegant masterpiece. While some of the tracks may be dark, this album is rich with emotion and powerful lyrics. Majical Cloudz is one of a kind and Are You Alone? is a great final album.
